How did you get started
My dad (Darrell Carlson) raced for 24 years, so I grew up watching him
race, and helping out in the garage, and when I was older, I went in
the pits to help. In 2005 my dad surprised me with a go-kart sitting in
the garage and told me that its mine to race. I’ve been racing
have you raced?

Tell us little
about your car and what tracks you race at?
I currently race a WISSOTA Super Stock, it’s a 2006 Affordable
Chassis, with a 350 Chevy power plant. I race regularly at AMSOIL
Speedway in Superior, WI, ABC Raceway in Ashland, WI, semi-regularly at
Proctor Speedway, Proctor, MN, occasionally at Rice Lake Speedway, Rice
Lake, WI, Eagle Valley Speedway, Jim Falls, WI, Red Cedar Speedway,
Do you remember
your first race? How did it go?
My first race in a Go-Kart was very memorable. Most Go-Kart racers just
hauled their karts the back of a pick-up or in a small trailer. We
pulled into Hwy. 13 Raceway in South Range, WI, with my dads 24’
enclosed race trailer, with a big 32 on the side, pulled by a crew cab
dually with a truck camper. Just turned a few heads. Anyways, I started
on the inside pole, and led the whole race until the last corner going
for the checkered and I got passed and ended up 2nd.
Who are some your
favorite drivers to race against?
Well, after years of watching most of the drivers I race against, I
have my personal goals on who I like to beat, but my cousin Andy
Grymala also races Super Stocks and we have raced each other clean when
we are next to each other, so far…
Is there any race
that sticks in your mind from the past, and why?
There is a couple, the most exciting I think was the 2010 Northern
Nationals at Superior Speedway. I started 9th, and fell back to 15th, I
changed lanes and put it to the top and drove it back to 5, battling
for 4th when the 4th place driver came down over my right front tire,
and the 6th place driver got my left side tires with 3 laps to go. I
remember this race because there were a lot of cars, it was fun to
drive, and the car hooked up.
What are your
plans for 2012 racing season? I plan on racing a Super Stock again. In the past I have ran for
points at AMSOIL Speedway and ABC Raceway in Ashland, WI, but this year
I’m not running for points, I don’t race at a level where I
finish consistently enough to do well in points, so I will stay pretty
loyal to AMSOIL Speedway on Friday nights, with a couple trips to St.
Croix Valley Speedway and Red Cedar Speedway. Saturday nights I’m
going to travel around. I want to try some new tracks like Cedar Lake
Speedway, Rice Lake Speedway, Ogilvie Raceway, Hibbing Raceway and
Princeton Speedway. Sundays will be an occasional trip to Proctor
Speedway or Eagle Valley Speedway.
Do you race sim
racing, and if you do can you learn anything from that?
I would like to, but I don’t have time. I do play Sprint Cars:
Showdown at Eldora on PS2 quite often, and will beat anyone who
When you are not
racing what do you do for fun?
Racing is my life, but I’m still in High School and in welding
classes after school at WITC. I work in the garage fabricating or
fixing things and that’s pretty much it.
Did you play any
sports growing up?
I was in a bowling league when I was younger, but my interest in my
Go-Kart grew and I had to get a job.
