How did you get started in racing?
In 1993 My dad was working on a super modified driven by Dave
Shullick. That winter, my dad and I went to Columbus with the
Shullicks to watch DJ Shullick race a quarter midget indoors. A
few weeks later we bought a quarter midget and I ran my first race in
January 1994 at age 9. In 2001 at age 16, we bought a 305
pavement sprint car and began running it weekly at Sandusky Speedway as
well as traveling throughout Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana with the 305
Sprint Asphalt Series (305 SAS). In 2004 I started running
autocrosses in a formula SAE car off and on and still continue racing
them on a limited basis. For 2011 we are running the full
schedule with the Buckeye Super Sprints.
And whats the most
enjoyable thing about racing?
I enjoy the competition, speed, g forces, fans, and the engineering of
the race car. Being a Mechanical Engineer by trade, the inner
workings of how everything on the car should work together really
intrigues me. 2011 is the first year we have debuted a new race
car that we designed and built ourselves. It is really enjoyable
to see our ideas go from paper, to a car being built in the shop, to
setting a track record in it's first race and winning it's third race
What division do you race
in and what tracks do you race at?
I race with the Buckeye Super Sprints based out of northern
Ohio. The Buckeye Super Sprints is a 305 chevy powered, winged
pavement sprint car group that races throughout Ohio and
Michigan. We race at Columbus, Sandusky, Toledo, and Flat Rock
this year. In the past we have raced at Kil-Kare, Oswego (NY),
Lorain County, and Lake Erie, but none made it on the schedule this
Who are some your
favorite drivers to race against?
#1 would be Kevin Shirey. We grew up together and he is
still one of my best friends. I also enjoy racing against Talon
Stephens, Ryan Gillenwater, and anyone else that shows up determined to
win and will race you hard.
When you are not racing
what do you do for fun?
I enjoy running, biking and mountain biking. I also enjoy
restoring antique tractors and vehicles as well as building race
If you could switch rides
with any driver in any type of racing which one would it be?
I would love the opportunity to drive the Dick Myer owned 50m 410
pavement sprint car. Anyone that has seen that car run will
understand why, it is the baddest pavement sprint car I have ever seen.
Did you play any sports
when you were growing up?
Football, track, baseball, and of course racing.
Is there any race that
sticks in your mind and why?
Hands down the 2006 Hy-Miler at Sandusky Speedway. The Hy-Miler
is the most prestigious race of the year for us, and nothing beats
winning in front of a standing room only crowd.
Is there anybody you
would like to thank?
First I need to thank my parents and wife for all of their
support. My sponsors Perfection Fabricators, Banks Manufacturing,
Profox racing, Northern Ohio Roofing and sheet metal, RAM engineering,
DB3 imaging, and The 4th turn crazies make it possible for us to make
it to the track and succeed every week. I also need to thank
Jason Sukey, Tom Scheel, Chicken Lakner, and Joe Strohsack for their
help building our new race car this past winter.
